Head of School Welcome

I grew up as a church-goer, but not a Christian. It was the influence of Christian friends at High School that led me to become a follower of Jesus.

I wanted to become a primary school teacher from the age of 7 when I had an outstanding teacher who inspired me. I attended Christchurch Teachers College in 1975, as well as Canterbury University where I studied Education and Geography. In 1977 I worked for Volunteer Service Abroad in Tonga, my first ‘real’ teaching job. The Tongan friends that I made have influenced my life and my faith over many years, and still do today.

I was married to Rebecca in 1981.  We have 4 children (all now adults) who are also committed Christians and have attended Middleton Grange at various times.  Throughout their childhood I was a primary school teacher, and for 20 years a principal. Rebecca is also a primary school teacher. Due to our shared interest in children, we have been involved in children’s ministries in our local church (wherever that happened to be) for many years – Sunday School, kids clubs, etc. We have also been actively involved in music, eldership, leading home groups etc.

On 22nd February 2011 our life was tragically changed by the death of our youngest son, Isaac, who worked for CTV. We mourn his loss and the loss of many other precious lives on that day that is etched into our memories forever.

I’m excited to be leading the Primary School at Middleton. The staff are committed and skilled people who have created a great learning environment.  I’m thrilled to be part of this vibrant team, and my aim is to inspire staff and students in their learning and their faith.
