Middleton Grange Secondary Library

The Secondary Library is centrally located upstairs in the school's G block. It serves pupils in years 7-13 as well as staff. The library is a warm, light, pleasant place to be providing pupils with options to read or study at the tables in the central space, to relax in the large reading pit at the sunny northern end of the library or to research using the computers in the ICT area. There are approximately 17,000 items in the library's various collections. These resources support the school's literacy initiatives as well as recreational reading. The library uses the AccessIt library management system which is user-friendly and allows users easy access to the collections via the computer catalogue.

Hours

The Library is open from 8.30am - 4.30pm Monday to Friday.

Services

Each Year 7 and 8 class is scheduled for a weekly visit to the Library. Class teachers may schedule visits to the Library at other times for research or recreational reading. Bookings can be made with Library staff, who are available to assist with research and the teaching of information literacy skills.

Pupils in Year 7 and those new to the school undertake an orientation exercise early in the first term. Year 8 pupils undergo a one term information literacy course. They have two one hour lessons a week in which they learn transferable skills to equip them for research in any subject area.

Pupils are encouraged to make use of Christchurch City Library databases and other databases available via the Internet to enhance their research. Pupils must be personal members of the City Library and have a PIN to access these databases. This can be arranged by Library staff.

Pupil Participation

Pupils in Years 9-13 can choose to become Student Librarians. They work once a week, at either interval or lunchtime and assist at the desk by issuing and returning books and helping pupils locate books. They also do various other book processing tasks.
